CORVALLIS, Ore. - The noise in Gill Coliseum was barely noticeable.
The Beavers? zone lulled them to sleep.
But after alethargic first-half performance against one of the Pac-10?s lower-rung teams, the Bruins finally showed up in the second half against Oregon State, winning 71-56.
And a lot of that had to do with UCLA's aggressive attacking style.
?We have to push the ball, because that?s the way we play,? sophomore Darren Collison said. ?Our best way to attack the zone is to beat them in transition so they won?t play the zone.?
With the Bruins? aggressiveness, five UCLA players finished in double figures for the first time all season. Collison had six assists, and the Bruins finished shooting 48 percent from the field.
From the 3-point line, the Bruins finished seven for 18 as Collison?s and forward Josh Shipp?s penetration toward the basket created easy 3-point opportunities.
?We are a great shooting team,? UCLA coach Ben Howland said. ?I thought it helped that we got a lot of good shooting opportunities in the second half.?
In the first half, however, the Bruins lacked the intensitythat propelled them to a blowout victory over Washington. The Bruins continuously settled for outside shots and trailed 17-14 with 9.44 seconds left before half-time.
During the first 20-minute stretch the Bruins only attempted six free throws.
?We definitely came out slow,? Shipp said. ?We have to learn how to put it together for 40 minutes, and maintain the same intensity as we do at home.?
In the end, the Bruins were able to rely on the outside shooting of junior Arron Afflalo and Shipp, but they know that nine first-half turnovers against one of the worst teams in the Pac-10 will notsuffice when they face highly ranked teams Arizona and Oregon.
?We played Oregon State,? Collison said. ?Unfortunately, we played down to their level for some part of the game, but we know how to raise our level of play.
?Most of us competed in the Final Four last year, after all.?
On Thursday night, a 14-point victory in UCLA's first true road game was satisfactory, but there are much tougher tests yet to come for thetop-ranked Bruins.

THE PIT: The second stop on the Bruins? trip through the Beaver State will be considerably harder on Saturday as the Bruins travel to play No. 16 Oregonon its home court.
Oregon?s Mac Court is traditionally one of the loudest home courts in all of college basketball, and Ducks fans are sure to be loud after Oregon lost a nail-biter 84-82 to USC on Thursday night.
?Their team will only be more motivated now,? Howland said. ?It is going to be a real challenge for us.
?Oregon has five guards who can all shoot the ball, and they are vastly improved from what they were last season.?
Oregon was 13-0 prior to Thursday?s loss to the Trojans, and the Bruins know they can?t take the Ducks lightly at all.
?They are one of the top teams in the Pac-10,? Afflalo said. ?Their arena is very loud, and we will have to bring a high level of intensity.?
WESTBROOK CHIPS IN: Freshman point guard Russell Westbrook has taken a larger role in recent games, and his improvement was on full display Thursday night against the Beavers.
As soon as he entered the game, Westbrook penetrated the Beavers' zone and scored a mid-range jumper.
Although those were his only two points of the game, his teammates recognized the spark Westbrook provides off the bench.
?He brings us that energy that we need,? Collison said. ?That jumper he made spread out their zone, and we were able to attack it from there.?
DRIBBLERS: Fox Sports Net ended up televising Thursday?s night game after UCLA had sent a petition to get the game televised. While Fox Sports televised the Arizona-Washington game nationally, the UCLA-OSU game was shown locally in Southern California and Oregon. Freshman forward Nikola Dragovic made an appearance at the end of Thursday?s game and shot a 3-pointer in the sole minute he was in.
It was Dragovic?s third appearance of the season. Thursday?s attendance at Gill Coliseum was 6,834.
