When sophomore guard Michael Roll saw Washington switch to a zone defense in the second half, he licked his chops in anticipation.
Soon after, the 12,042 fans in attendance witnessed Roll's anticipation translate into results.
Roll scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half, knocking down three of his four 3-point attempts in the half while denying the Huskies any chance to make a push for the lead.
"I'm just glad Mike Roll came in and made some big shots for us," coach Ben Howland said. "(He) had a very good performance."
Roll's shooting was instrumental for the Bruins in the second half as the Huskies crept back into the game with their zone defense. After the Huskies cut the Bruin lead to 12 points with 11:50 to go in the game, Roll went on a tear, scoring 11 points in just under three and a half minutes, pushing the Bruin lead to 76-55 at the 8:24 mark.
Roll was able to convert in transition and keep the Husky zone honest by hitting outside shots.
"If I'm not in the game when the zone happens, I'm kind of itching to get off the bench," Roll said. "We move the ball pretty good, we get high-post touches and we get a lot of open shots off that. Hopefully I can just knock them down."
The Bruins have looked stagnant at times against the zone this season and the Washington game was no exception. But after a few converted outside shots opened up the Husky zone, the UCLA guards were able to penetrate, score and create opportunities for the Bruin big men.
Even Roll, who normally does all of his scoring from beyond the arc, began to find gaps in Washington's defense and attacked inside.
"Their zone was working pretty well," Roll said. "We had a timeout and we told each other that we need to start attacking. We all did that and we found open guys ?? guys in the middle too."

SHIPP OK: Sophomore forward Josh Shipp missed the final 11 minutes of the game after retreating to the sideline with cramps. Shipp, who has been playing through a sprained ankle he sustained in practice Tuesday, received treatment after the game and should be fine, according to Howland.
"He didn??t get to practice much this past week because of the sprained ankle," Howland said. "He was just cramping up.
"The official asked him, 'Are you OK?' and Josh's immediate response was, 'Yeah, I'm fine.' We had to burn a timeout. If he had said, 'Yeah, I'm hurt,' we wouldn??t have had to burn a timeout."

MATA AT THE POINT?: In a game full of Bruin highlights, the one standout play of the game had to be when junior center Lorenzo Mata stepped into the passing lane for a steal and took off dribbling the ball with junior guard Arron Afflalo running the wing on a 2-on-1 fast break.
Mata, not known for his ball-handling skills, dribbled nearly the length of the court before making a perfect bounce pass to Afflalo, which the guard easily laid in the hoop.
"What a great fundamental play," Howland said after the game. "That was sweet."
"I was actually asking for (the ball) early, but (Mata) was handling it OK so I just kept running," Afflalo said. "That was good, he remained calm and we don't anticipate that anymore."
