This is an incredibly beautiful, spacious, quiet, affordable, and unique living arrangement, especially for a solo PhD student / post-doc or a couple. Please shoot me an email if you have any interest and we can arrange for a tour. We are seeking someone who loves nature and would be excited to wake up every morning to the sounds of hawks, jays, and woodpeckers perched in the surrounding giant redwood trees.
The neighborhood:
The house sits on a wooded half-acre atop the Santa Cruz mountains overlooking Silicon Valley. We are approximately ~20 minutes from the ocean, and ~5 minutes from any number of incredibly scenic hiking and trail-running destinations with views of the entire bay and the coast (not to mention the best cycling in the bay). Our only neighbors are Poko and Chihuly, the two horses that pasture next to our property line. Our property is frequently visited by trespassers in the form of foxes, huge flocks of quail, deer, woodpeckers, jays (and just once, with low certainty, a mountain lion). Our property has an extremely productive apple tree that we make cider from each year – and we have access to more blackberries than we could ever want. We're also on the edge of an eccentric and fun neighborhood complete with old growth redwoods, lots of horses, and no shortage of friendly people. It usually takes about 20-25 minutes to drive to campus (weekends can take longer) and, with appropriate stamina, courage, and planning, you can commute by bike.
The roomies:
Should you join us, you will be living with me, a 5th year PhD student in the Baccus lab with an aptitude for knitting and fiddling, my girlfriend Misha, who is a visual artist and filmmaker working on her magnum opus, and one as-of-yet-unknown roommate.
The house:
The house itself is huge, complete with tons of windows and two crusty senior grad students. We have a hot tub. There is a large living room (with a fireplace/stove) and separate dining room, as well as a large open kitchen with a dishwasher and two separate sinks. There is an attached garage and basement storage under the house as well. Your bedroom would be in the back of the house with a view of the giant apple tree, and you would share a bathroom with Mark. Misha and I share the master bedroom. Did I mention that we have a hot tub?
