The Bubbaland Community in Professorville, Palo Alto, is looking for a subletter! We are located near downtown Palo Alto, right behind the Town and Country Plaza. We are around the corner from Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, a quick walk to the Palo Alto Caltrain station, close to multiple farmers markets, and a quick bike ride to Stanford’s main quad or Stanford hospital.
We are a community of around 8 graduate students and young professionals (mid-20’s-30’s) who value sustainability, social justice, and communal living split across three units in a single big home; the current opening is for a bedroom in our private upstairs 2-bed 1-bath unit, available now until ~1/1/2023 (somewhat flexible end date). The room and apartment are furnished (pictures on craigslist ad show the available bedroom) - if there is anything you need, let us know and we can try to accommodate. Subletters who can rent for the longest amount of time will be prioritized.
The entire house engages in weekly house dinners, house meetings, and bi-monthly outdoor work days. Together, we share and communally work to maintain (and beautify!) our outdoor spaces, including a back patio, several garden areas, and a raised bed for herbs/vegetables. We also split utilities/WiFi across the complex, and have tons of permitted street parking as well as a driveway with 3 parking spots and a covered bike shed. We've been practicing social distancing in our common outdoor spaces but still finding ways to spend time together; we are happy to share more about COVID policies.
We all love building community both in and outside of the house. Before COVID, we've hosted potlucks, open mic nights, “ballot research parties” to research local issues before voting, chamber music concerts, board game nights, and movie nights in our basement home theater. Sometimes we will go off on a hike or out for a volunteering activity together. In COVID-times, we’ve enjoyed socially distant bonfires on our patio, house excursions to Building Resources (amazing lot of recycled construction supplies) and Bay Natives (incredible California native plants for landscaping!) in SF, elaborate outdoor dinner parties, mushroom foraging trips and more.
Now for the nitty-gritty details! We communally share chores and responsibilities as well as most of our dry goods and staple food items, and we have in-building washer/dryer. Rent is $1650/mo for one bedroom in the 2-bed 1-bath unit; utilities include high-speed internet, electricity, gas, and water, and often come to roughly $60 per month. Bathroom is shared with the other (male, mid 20s) resident of the 2bed unit.
As a subletter, you'd be expected to participate in the house community, including helping with group work days and being respectful of shared spaces and amenities. If you're interested in this sublet, please get in touch and I'd be happy to answer any additional questions.
